Dutchess CountyPistol Association

Classes

Training The Dutchess County Pistol Assoc. is dedicated to handgun safety.
Because we feel strongly that safety is an important aspect of our shooting sport, we are proud to offer NRA Certified Safety Classes.
The DCPA has several NRA Certified Trainers on staff that conduct classes on a regular basis.
Currently the only course we offer is the NRA Basic Pistol Course. This course is open to both members and the public.
Anyone age 14 and up can attend this class and a valid NYS pistol permit is NOT required.
One reason to take this course is to fulfill the requirement needed to become a member of the DCPA.
Others take the course to acquire the certification needed to apply for their NYS pistol permit as well as out of state pistol permits.
In any case, learning the basics of safe pistol shooting is essential to becoming a responsible handgun owner.

NRA Certified Basic Pistol Course

Pistol Safety Book The goal of the NRA’s Basic Pistol Course is to teach the basic knowledge, skills and attitude necessary for owning and using a pistol safely.
The minimum time length of this course is 10 hours total and is usually given over the course of 2-3 days.
Using the NRA training method of Total Participant Involvement, this basic course provides hands-on learning opportunities in the following areas:

  • Safe firearm handling
  • Firearm parts and operation
  • Ammunition and its function
  • Shooting fundamentals and an opportunity to develop them on the range
  • How to select, clean and store a firearm
  • Review of various activities available to help participants
  • Developing shooting skills
Certificates are awarded to participants who successfully complete this basic course.

This course, and all NRA courses, stress the Three Fundamentals of Safe Gun Handling:
  1. ALWAYS keep the gun pointed in a safe direction.
  2. ALWAYS keep your finger off the trigger until ready to shoot.
  3. ALWAYS keep the gun unloaded until ready to use.
